I basically bailed on NaNo. :)

The problem was that I would get 500-1000 words written, realize I had no idea where to take things, and then either a) write something random, or b) start over. I wound up completely scrapping the idea and starting a silly story that kind of poked fun at fantasy, and then decided I really didn't want to force myself to write a novel. I think it was largely due to my utter lack of preparation.

Awesome, Matt! I like lists insofar as they provide a reference point, but they are definitely not for everyone.

Thanks for the suggestion on writingexcuses.com. I'll definitely check it out.

I'd also love to hear how you made out with NaNoWriMo. I did a little note-taking, but full-blown writing was a tactical impossibility for me at the time. How did it go for you?

On Writing was more beneficial to me than my English degree. You should also check out Writing Excuses (writingexcuses.com). It's three writers talking about the craft in 15-minute blocks, which is perfect for, say, hitting the bike. The most important thing is just to write, though.

I haven't made an official list for this year. A few weeks ago, I found a notebook that I had listed out several goals in, along with milestones that would tell me I was making progress. I started in the middle of 2009 and never did anything with it. I'm thinking lists aren't the best approach for me.

I do plan on accomplishing things, though. I started exercising again (my wife and I are competing for tiny prizes every two weeks), and I'm planning on going all the way back to the basics with my guitar and finally learning to sight read (I'm giving lessons to myself on Wednesdays, starting tonight). Those are the two big things for me.

Well you know I'm in. Think about it: if you have Sirius, like mine can travel from my car into my home. Others even have the Stiletto which is basically a satellite radio walkman that goes everywhere.

I love a good flogging! Thanks brother. I'm thinking all of us, a bus, and Brazil in 4 years for some FIFA World Cup & this will be our soundtrack. Uh, and let's hire a driver so we can party the whole way.

I've gotta say these guys have the type of music whether a harder tune or softer it doesn't matter; just stirs the soul.

nice dude. I've never heard much from these guys but just pressed play and am digging it so far (i.e., the first minute of the first song). love when there's a band I've been meaning to listen to for a while and then a buddy gives a little nudge for it.

In answer to your questions:
1 & 2 - Phish and other jam bands that change it up all the time. Just about every other band I have no desire to see more than once. The only exception I've come across recently is Wilco. And I also like seeing bands I've seen in smaller venues play in bigger venues...just saw Heartless Bastards for the second time a few months ago in a bigger venue and it was a completely different experience - the change in the audience's energy makes it like seeing a brand new band. Even if I don't like a band live, I never regret seeing them at least once.

3 - in order to do that, they would have to evolve the ability to think rather abstractly (you could probably teach a generation or two to think about tokens like that, but unless they can then in turn teach it to future generations, the long-range implications are moot). So the implications would be that, if they were able to, there wouldn't be much separating them from humans and we should all make sure to lock our doors at night.

We are all so drawn to "color" - spectacle, activity, stuff - that we sometimes forget to appreciate the absence of it all and how that absence can have a meaningful impact on our ability to put things in perspective.

I like how you draw an analogy between things left undone and the fading of colors...

I see the use of white among the spray of colors as "downtime." When the riotous colors of my To Do list scream at me, I find solace in the "white" of space. Whether wasted or recharging, I have to focus on a few white spaces in my day.

i would only add that its also never a wrong time to change your mind to the right decision. knowing that it is 'right' can be the hardest part. my only advice: let your heart do the thinking.

I hate when people ask, "is that even a word?" If you put sounds together and I understood what you meant, then yes, it is a word. That's kind of how language works.
